The vault fresco of the Cappella Sansevero, gilded painted architecture opening into clouds and saints
Look up: the Glory of Heaven, painted across the vault by Francesco Maria Russo in 1749, in colours the prince mixed himself.

The collection

Three works, one chapel

The face of the Veiled Christ seen through the carved marble shroud

Giuseppe Sanmartino · 1753

The Veiled Christ

The prince asked for a dead Christ under a transparent shroud carved from the same block as the body. The sculptor he first chose, Antonio Corradini, died in 1752, and the commission passed to a young Neapolitan, Giuseppe Sanmartino.

Sanmartino made the veil restless. It sinks into the eyes and the open mouth and lies so close over the hands and feet that the wounds read through it. For centuries people blamed alchemy. The prince's own payment order, for a statue covered with a veil of marble, says otherwise.

Look for: the swollen vein on the forehead, and the crown of thorns and pincers at the feet.

Disillusion by Francesco Queirolo, a man pulling free of a marble net with a winged genius beside him

Francesco Queirolo · 1753–54

Disinganno

The prince dedicated this group to his father, who after a restless life came home to Naples and ended his days as a priest. A man pulls himself free of a net, helped by a winged genius with a flame on its brow. English guides call it Disillusion, or Release from Deception.

The net is cut entirely from marble, standing free of the body in places. The story goes that the craftsmen who usually polished statues refused to touch it in case it shattered, so Queirolo finished it himself with pumice.

Look for: the knots of the net where it lifts away from the shoulder, and the open Bible on the globe.

The skull of one of the Anatomical Machines, laced with reconstructed blood vessels

Giuseppe Salerno · 1750s

The Anatomical Machines

Down a narrow stair, in the room the prince meant as his family's funerary temple, stand two skeletons, a man and a woman, each wrapped in an almost complete network of arteries and veins. The Palermo doctor Giuseppe Salerno made them; the prince bought the first in 1756.

Naples once whispered that he had two servants killed to make them. The vessels are in fact a reconstruction in beeswax and colour, so precise that researchers still debate how it was done.

Look for: the finest vessels in the hands, and the fragment of the original labyrinth floor beside the cases.

About the chapel

Cappella Sansevero
